How To Measure Hat Size

Wrap a fabric tape measure around the circumference of your head with the tape meeting at the center of your forehead.
Place the tape measure where you want the hat to sit. Most commonly, this is mid-forehead (a thumb’s width or approximately 1 or 2cm above your ears) and at the widest part of the back of your head.

+ TOP TIP: Measure in front of a mirror to make sure the tape measure is situated correctly. Alternatively, enlist a friend or family member to help. Consider measuring a couple of times to be sure you’ve got the most accurate measurement.
Note the measurement and use our size charts to confirm your hat size.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I’m between hat sizes?
If you are between hat sizes, round up to the next size as that offers more comfort.
What if I don’t have a tape measure?
If you don’t have a tape measure, use a piece of string or ribbon to wrap around your head. Lay the string flat on a ruler and measure the length to find your hat size.
How should I position the tape measure?
The tape measure should sit flat against your head with no twists. Check that it is level and sits evenly around the head, not falling low or creeping too high.
How tight should the tape measure be?
The tape measure should be firm against your head, but always comfortable. It shouldn’t be so tight that skin is compressed.
How should the hat feel once on?
The hat should be snug against the back of the head. If the hat is too large for you, it will slip too low down your brow, whereas a hat that is too small will sit too high on your head.
However, it’s really about personal preference. If you want a loose and roomy fit, opt for a larger size hat. Alternatively, if you’d rather a tighter fit, go for a smaller size.
Think about whether your hair will interfere with how the hat will sit on your head. If you wear your hair in an up style, such as a man bun, work out if your hat will sit above or on top of the hair.
Are hat sizes universal?
No, hat sizes are not universal, though many milliners do offer the same range of sizes. Because of these variations, always check hat sizes when shopping and don’t rely on your hat size with other milliners as they can vary.
It’s also worth noting that imperial sizing varies between the UK and the US, with the US an eighth of an inch larger than UK measurements.
How do I buy a hat for someone without knowing their hat size?
It can be challenging to buy a hat as a gift for someone without knowing their hat size. We recommend using an existing hat of theirs as a guide or you could opt for the most popular size of men’s hat which is large – though only if likely to fit.
